Summary: From Red Rock Canyon to the Grand Canyon — discover breathtaking nature escapes just minutes from the Las Vegas lights.

If you are jaded by the casinos, buffets, concerts and Elvis impersonators of Las Vegas, then you need to dig deeper because there's so much more to experience.

Las Vegas offers an incredible array of outdoor adventures just a short ride from the Las Vegas Strip. Whether you’re into hiking, history or breathtaking desert landscapes, the region surrounding the city is full of natural treasures worth exploring. Here are some of the outdoor destinations that prove it’s about more than bright lights — it’s also about wide-open skies and unforgettable scenery. After touching down at the Elara, a Hilton Grand Vacations Club I set my itinerary for exploring.

Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam is conveniently located about 30 miles southeast of the city, and it's an engineering marvel. Completed in 1936, the dam not only controls flooding and provides hydroelectric power but also created nearby Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the country.

You can rent a car and visit the Dam on your schedule or visit as part of a tour. Either way, it’s a quick, interesting and photo-worthy spot. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking a boat ride on Lake Mead or hiking one of the scenic trails nearby.

Just 20 minutes west of the Las Vegas Strip lies Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a paradise for hikers, climbers and photographers, as well as people like me who really dig the big, colorful rock structures I don't normally see on the East Coast. Red Rock Canyon is known for its towering red sandstone peaks and unique rock formations.

Red Rock Canyon can be toured via a 13-mile scenic drive with plenty of overlooks for taking photos. There are over 30 hiking trails ranging from easy walks to strenuous climbs, which is great if you’re traveling with family or friends with different physical abilities. Popular trails like Calico Tanks and Ice Box Canyon showcase the desert’s diverse beauty. I rented a car during my visit to Las Vegas and explored the Canyon at my leisure.

Whether you spend a few hours or an entire day, Red Rock Canyon provides the perfect escape for those who crave fresh air, wide-open spaces and expansive vistas.

Valley Of Fire State Park

About an hour northeast of Las Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park lives up to its name with fiery red sandstone structures. As Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, it’s a must-see for anyone seeking surreal landscapes and vibrant colors.

The park is dotted with incredible rock formations, including the famous Fire Wave, Elephant Rock and the Beehives. Ancient petroglyphs carved by Indigenous tribes thousands of years ago can be found on the rocks. It is amazing to see that the petroglyphs are still visible today.

Hiking trails vary in length and difficulty, making it easy for visitors of all levels to explore. But just like Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire is home to car-friendly roads, allowing you to navigate to many starting points in the park. You don't have to hike or walk for miles to take in majestic views of the famous towering rocks.

The Grand Canyon

Did you know you can also visit the Grand Canyon on your Las Vegas stay? One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon is just a few hours’ drive — or an even shorter helicopter ride — from Las Vegas. The West Rim, home to the famous Skywalk glass bridge, is the most accessible option for visitors starting out from Las Vegas.

Standing on the rim, gazing into the canyon’s vast expanse, is a truly humbling experience. Extend your trip, and you can hike trails, go river rafting or simply soak in the awe-inspiring views. I opted for a full-day bus tour that included Hoover Dam, Boulder City and the Grand Canyon West Rim.
